What is GIS?A Geographic Information System is a complex, integrated computer system that can acquire, manipulate, store, analyze, and display geographic information. What makes a GIS different from other information systems is the geographic data, or spatial component, which is referenced to an actual location on earth. A GIS is dynamic compared to paper maps -- analysis of spatial data can be done at the click of a mouse. Researchers at Raritan Landing see settlement patterns much more clearly once the information is mapped using GIS. |

Instructions for Interactive MapSeveral tools are provided with the interactive map to allow navigation through the map. Use the arrows around the map, or pan tools, to view different sections of the map. Use the zoom tools, pictured at right, to zoom in or out of the map, to select an area to zoom into, as with the zoom box tool, or zoom out to the full map, as with the zoom full tool. To use the zoom in, out and full tools, simply click corresponding symbol. To use the zoom box tool, click the button and then click and drag your pointer to form a box around the area in the map you wish to zoom into. To view the different features, or "layers" of data, at Raritan landing, check the box next to the appropriate item. Click on the feature link to view a legend for that particular item. If you pan or zoom, the features you selected will stay selected, unless you uncheck them. |
